Ministry of Environment and Forests Project, Government of India launched in 1992, a program to ensure the long-term survival to the populations of elephants in their natural habitats by protecting the elephants, their habitats and migration corridors. The program aims to provide financial and technical support to wildlife management efforts by states for saving and increasing population of wild Asian Elephants. It also aims to address issues of man-animal conflict which is incresing day by day.

Other goals of Project Elephant are supporting the research of the ecology and management of elephants, creating awareness of conservation among local people, providing improved veterinary care for captive elephants. Singhbhum Elephant Reserve of Jharkhand was the very first elephant reserve.
